I was twenty-six when my three-year-old daughter died. In a sympathy card from my aunt, she wrote about King David and how he, also, had lost his son. David said, “… I shall go to him, but he shall not return to me.” Right then, I resolved to find out what I must do to get to heaven because that was the only way I would ever see Jenny again. My husband of three months went with me, and we went from church to church to find answers. A few months later, we both gave our lives to Jesus Christ.
I have written my entire testimony in a disturbingly frank and honest memoir titled For the Love of God: A Memoir. The fact that I ever became a serious Christian could only have come about from the hand of God. I would never have sought Him on my own. The book is available in paperback, hardback, Kindle, and now available on audio book.
When the youngest of my four children was sixteen, all of them were tired of me looking over their shoulders. My twenty-year-old daughter made a comment that I needed to “get a life.” So, I did. I decided to become a secondary English Language Arts teacher. That summer, my heart pounded as I stepped into my first class at Johnson Country Community College as a “non-traditional” student. Five years later, I received my bachelor’s degree from the University of Kansas, and three years after that, I received my master’s degree. I was fifty-three when I taught my first classes of junior and sophomore students in a public high school.
Fifteen years later, the documentary American Gospel: Christ Alone opened my eyes to the fact that the gospel message and the answers to many of the questions that most Christians wondered about were not being addressed in many of today’s churches.
Over the next two years, I researched and wrote a study for Christian women's groups that would not only clarify all the underpinnings of the gospel, but it would also answer those TLC questions. You know—those questions that keep us trembling, lost, and confused.
